In our previous blog, we have shared about the release of Veeam’s latest AWS backup and recovery solution: Veeam Backup for AWS v3 and upgrade procedure. In this post, we will cover What’s new with this latest version.
Amazon RDS backup
As we know Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. And It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks, and many organizations are using this solution.
With the release of Veeam Backup for AWS v3, Amazon RDS instances can be protected using flexible policy-based scheduling and lightning-fast database recovery to an exact point-in-time to the original location or to a new location in just seconds. Amazon RDS snapshots also benefit from snapshot replication across AWS accounts and regions and can help protect you against outages caused by failures and disasters that affect the availability of instances that are in the same location.
With Veeam Backup for AWS v3 you can easily protect databases by selecting an individual database or by using tags. Similarly, you can perform restoration in the same way, select the restore point you want to use, and run through the restore wizard, specifying which AWS account and region you want to restore the database to.
Currently, Veeam Supported Amazon RDS instances are:
- MariaDB
- Microsoft SQL Server
- MySQL
- Oracle
- PostgreSQL
Amazon VPC backup
With this new release, you can backup Amazon VPC configuration and settings within the Veeam Backup for AWS appliance database, as well as an optional copy to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). This option will help you to troubleshoot VPC errors by comparing past configurations with current ones and subsequently recovering only what is needed or the complete configuration of entire infrastructures identically in the same region or cross-account or cross-region for DR and dev/test.
In case of any malicious attack to your workloads and you need to restore all the workloads, recreating the security groups and other configurations will be a very tough and time-consuming job. With Veeam Backup for AWS support, you can backup all these configuration settings, and any time you can easily recreate a VPC in seconds.
Also, Veeam Backup for AWS provides the ability to detect changes in VPC configurations. By clicking the compare button, you’ll see the restore points window provides information on any changes that have been made. By selecting a restore point, we can then compare the attributes between the backup and what is in production. This gives the backup operator the ability to then decide whether to perform a restore.
Enhanced Application Consistency
With V3 Veeam backup for AWS ensures zero data loss protection for Amazon EC2 instances by using custom pre- and post-scripts in-guest for Windows and Linux workloads.you can configure the pre and post scripts with application-aware backup to ensure the application consistency of windows and Linux instances. For EC2 instances running Microsoft Windows OS, Veeam Backup for AWS supports scripts in the EXE, BAT, CMD, WSF, JS, VBS, and PS1 file format and for Linux OS, Veeam Backup for AWS supports scripts in the SH file format.
Role-Based Acces Control
With Veeam Backup for AWS V3 you can configure the access to the web UI and portal using Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). Role-Based Access Control enables the delegation of roles and access permissions to specific users, maximizing operational efficiencies while ensuring greater security.
With RBAC support, we added SAML2 support which allows you to configure an identity prover. This lets operations teams limit the usage of the Veeam Backup for AWS portal to specific tasks
There are three roles available:
- Portal Administrator: Full access to Veeam Backup for AWS, including its configuration
- Portal Operator: Access to the infrastructure and management components of Veeam Backup for AWS
- Restore Operator: Access only to the restoration of workloads
By restricting access, consumers now have the ability to ensure compliance within the operations procedures has adhered too. These accounts are created in the configuration area of Veeam Backup for AWS and added under portal users. When creating a portal user, you simply select either a local Veeam Backup for an AWS account or an Identity Provider Account.
AWS Outposts support
The same AWS-native backup and recovery used for your AWS Cloud environments is now available for on-premises data in AWS Outposts. Anyone who is using AWS Outposts in an on-premises data center can use Veeam Backup for AWS to protect and restore workloads running on Outposts. With AWS Outpost support, this provides consumers the capabilities to manage these hybrid AWS environments.
Backup and recovery
File-level recovery operations have been enhanced and now support the ability to restore individual files and folders directly to their original location by utilizing the Amazon Kinesis service.
With the previous versions, it was only possible to download the files to the desktop which the operator was accessing the portal. Now with File-Level Recovery, we can choose to restore to the original location. This will restore all the selected files directly back to the Amazon EC2 instance and the originating folder within that Amazon EC2 instance.
Excluding Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volumes from backup policies are now possible by manually selecting specific volumes in the policy wizard or automatically using volume tags.
Additionally, with the latest version Custom tags can now be applied to workers via the RESTful API. These tags will be applied to every deployed worker within the infrastructure.
