With Veeam Backup & Replication V10 an interesting feature Veeam Copy Mode is introducing in Veeam Capacity Tier. Capacity Tier augments your scale-out backup repository abilities and allows you to store your backup data in cloud-based object storage such as Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage, S3 Compatible Veeam Copy Mode of the Capacity Tier feature will be available with Veeam Backup & Replication V10 only and using the Veeam Scale-out backup repository (SOBR), you’ll be able to activate the copy mode.
With Veeam 9.5 U4 we only had one option when configuring Capacity Tier and all restore operations are still possible for backup data that has been copied to the Capacity Tier. Capacity Tier is an extension of SOBR and it moves the blocks of data from local storage to offsite storage and back depending on the configuration and retention policy.
Copy Mode feature
Copy Mode is an additional policy you can set against the Capacity Tier extent of the Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR), which is backed by an Object Storage repository. Once selected, any backup files that are created as part of any standard backup or backup copy job will be copied to the Capacity Tier. This fully satisfies the 3-2-1 rule of backup, which asks for one full copy of your data off-site.
This feature adds to the existing move functionality released as part of Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4 earlier this year and allows the almost immediate copy of backup data up to an Object Storage Repository.

Veeam Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR)
The scale-out backup repository is a logical entity that groups several backup repositories called extents. When you configure the scale-out backup repository, it creates a pool of storage devices and systems, summarizing their capacity. For long-term storage, you can instruct Veeam Backup & Replication to offload data from extents to the cloud-based object storage such as Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage, and S3 Compatible. The scale-out backup repository functionality is available only in Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions of Veeam Backup & Replication. To know more about how to configure SOBR check this article

Conclusion
Copy Mode of the Capacity Tier is a great feature for the future releases of Veeam backup and replication. There will be many use cases for on-premises Veeam customers and for our Veeam Cloud & Service Provider partners who should be looking to leverage this feature to offer new service offerings for IaaS and Cloud Connect Backup data resiliency.
